Economics: An Analytical Science
An economics degree from USM will teach you analytical skills that are highly sought after by companies from Wall Street to Silicon Valley. The economics program trains students to think critically by applying analytical models to a variety of human phenomena, and economic and policy issues. USM Economics students gain valuable experience through research opportunities and internships where they use statistical analysis to study these issues and develop policy-relevant solutions.
What Will I Learn?
Through a mix of theory, topics, and methods classes, Economics students learn to:
- develop a critical lens for creating solutions to complex decision-making problems
- write cogently about social, political, and economic issues applying this lens
- apply statistical methods to behavioral, financial, and social data
- develop policy solutions to complex problems
- research trends, analyze patterns, and develop predictions for changes in the financial, corporate and governmental sectors
Engaged Faculty Who Are Hands On
Most upper level economics classes have less than 20 students, meaning that you will get the individual attention that you need to fully develop your research and analytical skills. Faculty regularly have students work with them as assistants on their research projects, so students will get plenty of practical experience. Likewise, our faculty connect students to area employers for internships for more practical experience.
